The transformation of Brad Holmes into one of the NFL’s top general managers for the Lions.
Detroit Lions GM Brad Holmes has remained committed to a collaborative approach within his team, mirroring a growing trend across the NFL. He and his team have set an example of effective teamwork in pursuit of success at the highest levels.
Initially identified by Detroit’s VP of football operations Mike Disner and Rod Wood, Holmes was targeted by Detroit’s management to fill the general manager position after the departure of Bob Quinn. Following his appointment, Holmes and the Detroit front office embarked on overhauling the team’s roster, particularly focusing on strengthening the offensive and defensive lines to play a physical style of football.
Holmes emphasized the importance of conviction in every draft pick, highlighting the team’s commitment to thorough evaluation and selecting the right players. Despite some scrutiny, Holmes has delivered five Pro Bowlers in three years, demonstrating the success of the team’s “draft and develop” approach.
Holmes stressed the importance of alignment with head coach Dan Campbell in player evaluation and selection. He emphasized the need for prospects to fit not only on the field but also in terms of character and personality, which is evaluated through meetings and interactions with the coaching staff.
Holmes and Campbell share a close relationship and a unified vision for the team’s future, aiming to deliver a Lombardi Trophy to principal owner Sheila Hamp. Their collaborative approach in identifying players who align with Campbell’s philosophy has been key to the team’s strategy moving forward.
