Patrick Mahomes has given his stamp of approval to Kansas City Chiefs’ general manager Brett Veach following the team’s moves on Day 2 of the NFL Draft.
The Chiefs’ star quarterback expressed his excitement on social media after the squad’s eventful first two nights in the draft. Kansas City made a bold move by trading up for the 28th pick to secure Xavier Worthy, the speedy receiver who shattered the NFL Combine’s 40-yard dash record earlier in March.
They also acquired BYU offensive tackle Kingsley Suamataia, prompting Mahomes to tweet his support. The three-time Super Bowl winner took to Twitter to post: “I love Veach man!”
Veach isn’t just a sharp GM; he boasts a solid American football background himself, having excelled as a running back at Delaware and earning third-team All-Atlantic 10 accolades in 2000. Hailing from Pennsylvania, Veach began his management career with a coaching intern position at the Philadelphia Eagles before quickly climbing the ranks in the league’s executive offices.
By 2017, Veach had risen to the role of general manager for Kansas City, guiding the team into its current era as a dominant force in the NFL, largely due to strategic draft selections. Star tight end Travis Kelce, drafted by the Chiefs in the third round in 2013, and last year’s gem running back Isiah Pacheco from Rutgers in the seventh round are among the successes credited to Veach’s draft acumen.
Mahomes was initially a bit of a gamble when selected in the 2017 Draft, with Veach reportedly having to persuade the organization to take a chance on the young quarterback. The risk paid off handsomely for Kansas City, as Mahomes went on to earn six Pro Bowl appearances and two MVP titles.
Veach has been praised for maintaining a strong talent pool around Mahomes, winning the league’s Executive of the Year Award in both 2020 and 2023. However, he faced significant criticism when the team traded star receiver Tyreek Hill to Miami two years ago.
Despite facing initial challenges with a struggling pass-catching corps at the beginning of the last season, the Chiefs bounced back to secure a second consecutive Super Bowl title over the San Francisco 49ers in overtime last February. Veach’s identification of a promising successor to Hill in Worthy, a dynamic receiver known for his blistering speed, suggests continued success for the Chiefs in the forthcoming season.
