The Pittsburgh Steelers are eagerly anticipating a decision from free agent wide receiver Tyler Boyd in the near future.
Having expressed interest in adding the former Bengals standout to their roster, the Steelers hope to bolster their receiving corps, which still appears thin following the NFL Draft.
According to a report by Pro Football Network’s Alan Caplan, multiple teams remain interested in Boyd, with indications that he intends to announce his decision on which team to sign with following the conclusion of the NFL Draft. With draft weekend now behind us, the Steelers could receive updates on Boyd’s decision in the coming days.
Caplan noted, “Boyd, who is clearly the top slot receiver available on the open market, was looking for at least $9 million per year at one point earlier this offseason.”
Andrew Fillipponi of 93.7 The Fan previously reported that the Steelers had extended a two-year, $10 million offer to Boyd, falling below his desired salary and market projections. Spotrac estimates Boyd’s market value at three years and $26.1 million.
Boyd has been a key fixture as the starting slot receiver for the Bengals over the past six seasons, amassing 6,000 receiving yards and 31 touchdowns in 120 career games.
One potential hurdle for the Steelers is their current abundance of slot receiver options, including Quez Watkins, Van Jefferson, Calvin Austin III, and newly-drafted rookie Roman Wilson. While Boyd may not perfectly align with their current needs, the team believes Wilson’s versatility could potentially free up a slot for Boyd if he chooses to sign with them.
Ultimately, the Steelers will need to address this situation only if Boyd opts to join their ranks. However, they should receive clarity on his decision in the near future.
