2026 Four-Star Center Provides Recruitment Update at Mississippi State Team Camp.
Funches is impressed with what he’s seen from the Bulldogs
STARKVILLE – Germantown High School has its sights set on a boys basketball state championship next season, thanks in part to standout player Sam Funches.
Funches, a four-star center and the top player in Mississippi according to 247Sports, made an impression at Friday’s Mississippi State team camp at The Humphrey Coliseum, though not in his usual position.
“I’m happy to be here with my team, just trying to get better,” Funches told GenesPage.com. “I wasn’t playing in the post like I usually do.”
Following his coach’s instructions, Funches focused on improving his dribbling and outside shot during the scrimmages, under the watchful eyes of Mississippi State head coach Chris Jans and assistant George Brooks.
Friday’s camp also gave Funches a chance to connect with Mississippi State, with whom he already shares a strong bond.
“I have a great relationship with the staff, especially coach Brooks because he has been talking to me since I was in eighth grade. I talk to Coach Jans a lot too. They show me a ton of interest, and I think it’s a great relationship.”
A junior this upcoming season, Funches has garnered attention from top programs nationwide. Since receiving an offer from Mississippi State in August, he has also been offered spots at Missouri, Indiana, and Gonzaga. However, in-state teams have particularly stood out to him.
“Because of the relationships, I would say Mississippi State is definitely in my top 10,” Funches said. “I just stay neutral with everything else and don’t think about it. The other schools that have shown the most interest are Ole Miss, LSU, and several other SEC schools.”
While Funches’ future remains undecided, it seems likely that Mississippi State will remain a key player in his recruitment process.
“I will definitely be visiting Mississippi State and Ole Miss,” Funches said. “I haven’t thought much beyond that.”
